Why Dashboard Color Choices Matter More Than You Think
A dashboard with poor color choices can hide patterns, mislead readers, or exclude colorblind users entirely. Here is a practical framework for selecting palettes that are accessible and effective.
Start with Contrast Ratios
WCAG 2.1 requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and graphical objects. For chart elements, aim for 3:1 against the background. Use a contrast checker tool to verify each color in your palette before applying it.
Design for Colorblind Users First
About 8% of men and 0.5% of women have some form of color vision deficiency. The most common type is red-green colorblindness. Never rely on color alone to distinguish data series — always pair color with shape, pattern, or direct labels. Test your palette with a colorblindness simulator.
Use Sequential Palettes for Ordered Data
When showing values from low to high, use a sequential palette (light to dark of the same hue). Avoid rainbow palettes for ordered data — they create false boundaries and make it hard to judge which value is higher.
Limit Categorical Palettes to 7 Colors
Beyond 7 distinct colors, users cannot reliably distinguish them. If you have more than 7 categories, group the smallest ones into an "Other" category or use a different visualization like a treemap.
Test on Real Devices
